nautical fact of the day

The phrase "Take what you can, give nothing back" and variants thereof, which was made popular by the Pirates of the Caribbean films, has nothing to do being a greedy ol arsehole and keeping all the plunder for yourself. It's an old nautical term used by Bosun's and sail masters which reminds one to rig the sails so as to catch as much wind as possible, without letting any escape. This method ensures maximum use of both wind and sail.
